khams shamat
sabboura, syrian arab republic
2010

The Khams Shamat master planned project is located in the region of Sabboura, 15 minute drive from Damascus, located on the road linking Damascus to Beirut.

The site presents a unique opportunity. Located on the doorstep of Damascus and surrounded by the Syrian mountains, the 100 hectare site creates an exceptional new district that would help define Damascus into the 21st century. The aspiration is to create an international standard destination for the wider region will be underpinned by providing a vibrant and sustainable mixed-use development, filled with green spaces and a lively public realm. In creating successful and long-lasting neighborhoods, Sabboura is envisioned to set the standard for the city’s future expansion.

The completed master planned development will include a broad range of commercial uses, residential communities, hospitality venues, public open space and parks and will be anchored by a major shopping destination, the Mall of Syria. Critically important to the performance of the Mall of Syria and the master plan as a whole, is the Khams Al Shamat Town Square. This venue would serve as the ceremonial front door to Mall of Syria and establish the development’s social hub which would support community-wide events.

Our delicate role was to articulate the vision, the architectural framework and the urban design character for the urban heart of the Khams Shamat Development, providing specific architectural guidelines for the Town Square area, and expanding to include the overall masterplan.
