al gharafa store
doha, qatar
2007

The project sits on a 14,000m² flat plot of land in Doha, Qatar. This new commercial center is expected to serve both the local community and the neighboring cities.

The program consists of a shopping center with vast department stores, back of house services and amenities, and a partial area dedicated to commercial office spaces.  The rectilinear volume is folded and sculpted at integral instances in order to define entrances and create covered pedestrian areas.  Using these strategies creates a sense of space, highlights entrances, and serves as an optimal response to the local weather conditions by providing much needed shaded areas.

The massing addresses the urban scale of its surroundings, while benefiting from the best possible exposure and visibility.  The center is easily identifiable to the high speeding traffic nearby due to the ongoing flux of colors and graphics that are projected on its glazed skin facade.   The building sets itself as a landmark and destination point in the Qatari cityscape.
